Word Families: 3 & 4 Letters is a comprehensive phonics resource designed for Grade 1–2 students who are ready to move beyond simple CVC patterns. Through structured practice with longer word families such as –ack, –ail, –ain, –ake, –ame, –are, –ash, –ave, –ear, –ice, –ink, –ight, –ound, students develop advanced decoding skills, spelling accuracy, and confidence reading multisyllabic and blended words. Activities include picture matching, fill‑in‑the‑blank sentences, silly stories, riddles, and vocabulary lists that reinforce phonemic awareness and word recognition.
The resource aligns with early‑literacy standards across all Canadian provinces and territories and meets U.S. Common Core Grade 1 Foundational Skills for phonological awareness, decoding, spelling patterns, and reading fluency. Teacher rubrics, student tracking charts, and follow‑up activities support assessment and differentiation. This program is ideal for classroom instruction, intervention, literacy centers, and home learning.
Twenty-four-word families featuring 3 and 4 letter word families for each of the 5 vowels. There are twenty-one lessons for 3 letter word families and three lessons for 4 letter word families.Â
Students will become familiar with the rhyming words in each word family by completing the worksheets that focus on printing the sound block and using picture cues to write the letter pattern. A reinforcement activity will check their knowledge of the sound block and their ability to decode words. The exercises will also strengthen reading, writing, and spelling skills. For each family, three parallel activities are included.Â
Students become familiar with the rhyming words in the family on the first page by completing and printing the sound block letters. They will recognize the part-to-whole approach by printing the letters that represent the sound block. The second page enables students to make a visual connection between picture cues and the words formed. The third page has a variety of exercises to complete to reinforce knowledge of letter patterns and sound blocks.Â
