Teaching color recognition and color words provides a strong foundation for Grade 1 literacy development and directly supports key Common Core expectations in reading and language. Each lesson is structured into clear, manageable sections that introduce a new color through poems, stories, and guided activities. These mini‑lessons integrate naturally into a daily literacy block, helping students build vocabulary, make meaning from text, and use visual cues—core skills emphasized in the Common Core Reading Foundational Skills and Language standards.

This resource offers an engaging, hands‑on approach to learning nine colors and their corresponding uppercase and lowercase color words. As students explore each color, they also strengthen essential early literacy skills—such as visual discrimination, phonics, rhyming, classification, fine‑motor development, and word recognition. These activities support Common Core Grade 1 expectations in phonics and word analysis (RF.1.3), print concepts (RF.1.1), fluency (RF.1.4), and vocabulary acquisition (L.1.4–6), ensuring students build the foundational skills needed for successful reading and writing.
