Building Word Families #1 is a complete short‑vowel phonics program that teaches students to decode and spell using onsets and rimes. The teacher guide explains why word families accelerate reading development, citing research that the brain recognizes patterns more efficiently than individual phonemes. Through a structured five‑day sequence, students learn to hear sounds, identify rimes, build words, sort patterns, and apply these skills to reading and writing. Activities include rhyme charts, word building cards, missing‑chunk worksheets, word sorts, literacy centers, and shared writing.
The program covers 28 high‑utility short‑vowel rimes and provides extensive practice with single consonants, blends, and digraphs. Students learn to transfer these patterns to multisyllabic words, improving decoding accuracy and fluency. By emphasizing chunking, analogy, and repeated exposure, the resource supports foundational literacy expectations across Canada and aligns with U.S. Common Core Grade 1 phonics, fluency, and spelling standards. It is designed for whole‑group instruction, small‑group centers, and independent practice.
Standards Alignment Summary
How this Meets Canadian Curriculum Expectations
Across all provinces and territories, early literacy expectations include:
- Phonological awareness (rhyming, segmenting, blending)
- Phonics and word analysis (common spelling patterns, decoding strategies)
- Reading fluency
- Spelling using patterns
- Writing simple sentences
This resource directly teaches:
- Onsets and rimes
- Short vowel patterns
- Word families
- Decoding by analogy
- Spelling using patterns
- Reading fluency through repeated practice
- Writing sentences using learned words
These match every province’s Grade 1 foundational language expectations.
How this Meets U.S. Common Core Standards
The program aligns strongly with CCSS Grade 1 Foundational Skills:
- ELA-LITERACY.RF.1.2 – Demonstrate phonological awareness (rhyming, segmenting).
- ELA-LITERACY.RF.1.3.A–D – Know spelling-sound correspondences, decode regularly spelled one‑syllable words, use common vowel patterns, read words with digraphs.
- ELA-LITERACY.RF.1.4 – Read with accuracy and fluency.
- ELA-LITERACY.L.1.2.D/E – Use conventional spelling for short vowel words and phonetic spelling.
- ELA-LITERACY.W.1.5 – Produce and expand complete simple sentences.
The resource explicitly teaches:
- Onset–rime decoding
- Short vowel families
- Digraphs and blends
- Word building
- Reading fluency
- Writing sentences using patterned words
