All About Butterflies and Caterpillars is a comprehensive Grade 1–2 science and literacy resource that introduces young learners to the fascinating world of insects through the study of butterflies and caterpillars. Students explore the life cycle, body parts, habitats, behaviours, and adaptations of these animals using clear explanations, diagrams, poems, and leveled nonfiction readers. The text explains metamorphosis in detail—from egg to larva to pupa to adult—using simple language and vivid descriptions such as “The caterpillar grows quickly but its exoskeleton does not… the skin splits” .

The resource also integrates literacy development through reading comprehension, phonics, vocabulary, and creative writing activities. Students classify facts, sequence events, identify main ideas, and write stories using insect‑themed word banks. With its blend of science content and language‑rich activities, the resource fully supports Canadian science expectations for Growth & Changes in Animals, U.S. NGSS life science, and Common Core literacy standards for Grades 1–2.

Learning Objectives:

  • To introduce students to the insect world by studying the habits and lifestyles of butterflies and caterpillars.
  • Make students aware of the body parts of butterflies and caterpillars and their functions.
  • To inform students about the stages of development in the lifestyles of butterflies and caterpillars.
  • To teach and review previously learned skills during a science theme.

The resource teaches:

  • Life cycles (“A butterfly goes through four stages… egg, larva, pupa, adult.” )
  • Animal needs & habitats (“Butterflies live almost everywhere… rainforests, woodlands, fields…” )
  • Structures & functions (“A butterfly’s body has three parts… head, thorax, abdomen.” )
  • Growth & change (“The caterpillar grows quickly… its skin splits…” )
  • Protection & survival (“Butterflies escape harm as they blend with their surroundings.”)
  • Reading, vocabulary, phonics, writing (multiple worksheets throughout the resource)

These map cleanly to Canadian science expectations for Growth & Changes in Animals, and to U.S. NGSS 1‑LS1, 1‑LS3, 2‑LS4, plus Common Core literacy standards.
