Canadian Comprehension Grades 5–6 is a cross‑curricular resource that blends rich Canadian Social Studies content with targeted literacy skill development. Students explore national symbols, inventors, explorers, prime ministers, Aboriginal peoples, Canadian landmarks, sports, and famous Canadians through paired fiction and nonfiction texts. Each section includes comprehension tasks that build higher‑order thinking skills such as inference, cause and effect, comparing and contrasting, identifying main ideas, reading charts, and sequencing events. Writing tasks—diary entries, persuasive writing, descriptive paragraphs, and opinion pieces—extend learning and reinforce content knowledge.

The resource is structured for easy classroom use, with clear literacy and social‑studies focuses listed on each activity. Teachers guide students through readings, scaffold comprehension, and then release students to independent writing tasks. Built‑in reading, writing, and social‑studies assessments with rubrics support evaluation and reporting. With topics ranging from the Peace Tower and the Coat of Arms to Alexander Graham Bell, James Naismith, and Canadian landmarks, this resource strengthens students’ understanding of Canada while developing essential literacy skills.
