Dinosaurs introduce young learners to the fascinating world of prehistoric animals through clear explanations, rich vocabulary, and engaging visuals. Students explore what dinosaurs were, how they lived, what they ate, and how scientists learn about them today. The text explains major dinosaur groups—such as Sauropods, Theropods, Stegosaurs, and Ceratopsians—using accessible descriptions like “Theropods were meat‑eating dinosaurs… equipped with strong jaws and blade‑like teeth.” It also describes the Mesozoic Era, climate changes, and the environments dinosaurs lived in.

The resource also teaches how paleontologists uncover fossils, how dinosaurs may have behaved, and theories about why they became extinct. Activities across reading, writing, phonics, art, and math reinforce comprehension and cross‑curricular learning. With its blend of science content and literacy skill‑building, the unit supports Grade 1 expectations across Canada, Common Core ELA, and NGSS life science standards.

Learning Expectations:

  1. To acquaint students with the various types of dinosaurs that lived on earth millions of years
  2. To make students more aware of the differences between the various dinosaurs.
  3. To provide students with the opportunity to explore prehistoric times.
  4. To make students more aware of the way that our Earth and its inhabitants have evolved over the centuries.
  5. To develop and expand independent work habits and to reinforce various skills in the curriculum.
