Flying witches, haunting ghosts, jack-o-lantern smiles, and hooting owls help make Halloween an exciting, dramatic time of year. Share this occasion with your students by implementing these highly visual activities into your program. Includes activities that focus on these skills: phonics, word study, visual discrimination, printing, brainstorming, reading, art, drama, creative writing, and math.

This resource has been written so students are able to strengthen and practice their many reading, language, and mathematical skills using a special theme celebrated in North America. The theme is to be treated as a fun way to review and teach many concepts. Select and use the various activities with the students keeping in mind family customs and traditions.

Phonics Activities and Worksheets

  1. Initial Consonant Match: Color, cut out, mount, and laminate the picture cards and consonant cards. Store them in an-envelope. Attach the instruction card. The student will match the consonant to the picture.
  2. Final Consonant Match Color, cut out, mount, and laminate the picture cards. Store the cards in an envelope. Attach the instruction card. The student will match the final consonant to the correct picture.

Word Study Worksheets

  1.  Matching Upper- and Lower-Case Words: Cut out the word pumpkins. Color, mount, and laminate them. Store the pumpkins in an envelope. Attach the instruction card. The student will match the upper- and lower-case words. 
  1. Word/Picture Matching: Cut out the picture cards. Color, mount, and laminate them. Store the picture cards in an envelope with the word cards. Attach the instruction card. The student will match the picture cards and word cards correctly. 
  1. Rhyming Picture Match: Cut out the picture cards. Color, mount and laminate. Store the cards in an envelope. Attach the instruction card. The student will match the rhyming pictures. 
  1. Word Puzzles: Cut out the word puzzles. Color, mount, and laminate the pieces. Store the puzzles in an envelope. Attach the instruction card. The student will make Halloween words with the puzzle pieces.

Visual Discrimination Activities

  1. Pumpkin Face Matching Visual Discrimination: Cut out the pumpkin faces. Color, mount and laminate. Store the cards in an envelope. Attach the instruction card. The student will match the pumpkin faces that are the same. 
  1. Witch Matching Visual Discrimination: Cut out the witches. Color, mount and laminate. Store the cards in an envelope. Attach the instruction card. The student will match the pumpkin faces that are the same.

4 templates to make paper bag puppets. Students can color and cut along the dotted lines. Paste section A (the top half) onto the bottom of a brown paper bag. Section B goes underneath the flap on the side of the bag.
