Beautiful Bugs: Insects is a comprehensive Grade 1 resource designed to build foundational understanding of insects through reading, writing, phonics, vocabulary, art, and science activities. Students explore insect characteristics, body parts, habitats, movement, food, and life cycles using engaging booklets, matching games, riddles, and hands‑on tasks. The resource includes clear teacher notes, reproducible worksheets, and structured literacy supports that help young learners identify insects, describe their features, and understand how they grow and change. (Example citation: “Identify and name insects”)

The program also strengthens communication skills, listening, following directions, and creative expression. Students’ complete phonics activities, write sentences and stories, interpret pictures, and participate in discussions. Visual discrimination, motor skills, and art activities further enrich learning, making the resource multidisciplinary and developmentally appropriate. The resource strongly supports early science learning, literacy development, phonics, vocabulary, and communication skills. It aligns with Canadian provincial/territorial Grade 1 science expectations related to living things, insect characteristics, life cycles, habitats, and human–environment interactions, as well as U.S. Common Core ELA and NGSS Grade 1 Life Science standards.
