Poetry Prompts is a comprehensive literacy resource designed to help young learners develop confidence and enjoyment in reading, writing, and performing poetry. The book introduces students to the foundations of poetry—rhythm, rhyme, sound, imagery, and expression—through choral reading, listening activities, nursery rhymes, and teacher‑guided discussions. Students learn how to identify rhyming words, use word families, and recognize poetic structure while strengthening fluency and oral expression.
The resource then guides students through writing their own poems using scaffolded templates for rhyming couplets, two‑word poems, acrostics, limericks, haiku, and cinquains. With clear instructions, word lists, and step‑by‑step modeling, students build essential writing skills while exploring creativity and personal expression. The activities support early literacy development, phonological awareness, vocabulary building, and foundational writing expectations across Canadian and U.S. curricula.
Your students will learn to write poetry through 15+ worksheets. A further 30+ worksheets and activities will extend students' poetry writing skills in the following poetry forms:
- Two-word poems:
- Acrostic
- Limerick
- Haiku
- Cinquain
